It comes with a cash prize of 5.000 €.
For centuries, male-dominated pillars of education and science helped to establish institutionalized discrimination against women and to objectify their bodies. The winning all-female collective in this category directly challenges male notions of power through their innovative use of film language and archive material via a collage of scientific art historical imagery vs. current images from the sex industry.

“The City Of Neubrandenburg Award” will be awarded to the most courageous and artistically and/or socially ambitious film. It comes with a cash prize of 2.000 €.
The City of Neubrandenburg Award goes to a young female filmmaker, who courageously captures the delineation of male and female spaces within a religious and cultural context which traditionally presents the female body as taboo. The filmmaker herself enters these exclusively male spaces in order to gather her footage. The film’s aesthetic is reminiscent of the cinematic avant-garde in the vein of Sergei Parajanov in its poetic and meditative montage of imagery and text on screen.

Based on the specific situation in Jakarta, Indonesia “Oh Brother Octopus” shows the pollution of the oceans and its consequences for the people. With the help of an aesthetic interplay between sound and image, the film reminds us to re-establish and preserve the equilibrium between humans and nature.
