Since the fall of the Soviet Union and its domination of Eastern Europe, Bulgaria has been hit by devastating economic downturn. The abolition of “the planned economy” has resulted in the closure of a large number of factories and mass migration of the rural population to the city. The town of Altimir stands as a representative symbol for many similar, formerly thriving communities, now in decline after the loss of job opportunities. Deserted, overstrained and left behind by modernization, only Altimir’s “ancients” have stayed behind.
